Monte CarloOne week from tomorrow (28 Jan), the starter’s gun will sound the start of the inaugural edition of the U.S. Open at New York’s City’s fabled Madison Square Garden. The traditional annual gathering at the recently renovated venue will also signal the start of the 2012 IAAF Indoor Permit Meeting season, an action-packed four-week series of the world’s finest indoor athletics competitions.
Eight days after New York, the IAAF indoor tour will cross the Atlantic and land in Moscow for the Russian Winter meeting (5 February) to begin the major portion of the European season which includes stops in Karlsruhe, Germany, Calais, France, and Birmingham, UK before it concludes with the XL Galan in Stockholm on 23 February.
To help fuel the competitive fire, the 2012 international indoor circuit has the added focus of the biennial World title meet, as the best athletes in the world build up to the season’s climax at the 14th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, 9 to 11 March.
As a whole, 2011 witnessed two World records indoors – Ashton Eaton’s (USA) 6568-point tally in the men’s Heptathlon in Tallinn; and an 8:06.24 clocking by the Russian quartet of Aleksandra Bulanova, Ekaterina Martynova, Elena Kofanova, and Anna Balakshina to take down the women’s 4x800m Relay mark in Moscow.
