Men's Shot Put
Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski restored his supremacy with a third round 20.88 win in the men’s Shot Put at the Mercedes-Benz Arena here in Stuttgart.
After losing to Olympic silver medallist Christian Cantwell a week ago in Dubnica, Majewski wanted to prove his win in Beijing was no fluke. The ‘Polish Pirate’, as he was nicknamed by one of our correspondents, did the chase for the first three rounds as the 27-year-old American who was also a runner-up at the US Trials opened with 20.73, a mark which would prove his best today.
Majewski, the next thrower in the circle, responded with 20.68 and then 20.37 until his third-round winning effort.
The competition was mostly about these two giants as no other competitor reached the 20-metre line until the fourth and last round of throws.
Winner of the World Athletics Final last year, US champion Reese Hoffa who was a disappointing seventh at the Olympics, recovered some of his class with a last round effort 20.37 but even that wasn’t enough to get into the top 3 as his compatriot Daniel Taylor went one centimetre further with his last try.
Jamaica’s Dorian Scott, fifth at 20.04, was the only other man over 20 metres.
Majewski became the third Polish to take a World Athletics Final title after 400m Hurdlers Marek Plawgo and Anna Jesien won their respective event a year ago on this same track.
