NEWS FLASH - Soboleva improves her World Indoor 1500m record with 3:58.05; 4x800m mark also bettered!

Moscow, Russia - Continuing her spectacular form at this weekend's Russian Indoor Championships, Yelena Soboleva has today (Sunday 10) broken her own World Indoor 1500m record of 3:58.28 (set on 18 February 2006), with a performance that is 23/100th sec quicker - 3:58.05.**

The 25-year-old Russian who is the World Indoor (2006) and outdoor (2007) 1500m silver medallist yesterday set a national indoor 800m record of 1:56.49 at the championships

In second place in the 1500m came Yulia Fomenko, who beat Soboleva to the World Indoor title in Moscow two years ago. Fomenko’s time was 4:00.21 which was also a personal best (4:01.26 – 18 Feb 2006).

The bronze medal position in this Russian championship race was taken by Yekaterina Martynova, 21, and her time of 4:03.56 was the fastest ever indoors by a European U23-year-old athlete.

4x800m world mark also bettered!

A second World indoor record has also fallen today** at the championships, with the Sverdlovsk region improving the 4x800m World Indoor record set by a Moscow Region Team last year.

The Sverdlovsk squad finished the race in 8:14.53 over four seconds better than the previous mark of the Moscow squad (8:18.54 - 11 Feb 2007 in Volograd).
