Indoor 5000m debut for Lagat in Boston
Boston, USA – Former double World champion Bernard Lagat will be making his indoor debut at 5000m at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on 6 February.
Lagat, the 2007 World champion in both the 1500m and 5000m, won the bronze medal in the 1500m and the silver in the 5000m at this past summer’s World Championships. In total, Lagat has amassed a total of seven world championship medals (three gold, three silver and one bronze) in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m, and two Olympic medals (one silver and one bronze at 1500m. Lagat also captured the World indoor title in the 3000m in 2004.
The 15th edition of the Boston meet will mark the 35-year-old’s first indoor foray over 5000m. Outdoors, he holds a career best of 12:59.22.
Lagat will face Ethiopians Bekana Daba and Ali Abdosh, who each have sub-13:00 credentials over the distance outdoors. Also in the field is American Galen Rupp, the US indoor record holder over the distance. Last February, Rupp, who was eighth in the 10,000m in Berlin last August, clocked 13:18.12 in Fayetteville.
