World record holder Colin Jackson (Britain) running the last 110m hurdles race of his career - his competitive CV has encompassed a total of 327 races, of which 192 have been wins - had the worst of races, clipping the second, stumbling over the third and coming to a halt before the fourth barrier.
Gamely Jackson continued the race seconds later and finished to secure two points (8th) for the British team**. China’s Xiang Liu (Asia) who fell at about the same point of the race as Jackson, never continued and so failed to record the one point for last place for Asia.
Beyond the sad close to Jackson’s outdoor career - he will contest the IAAF World Indoor Championships next winter - at the head of the race Cuba’s Olympic champion Anier Garcia running for the Americas, secured the win into a strong head wind (-2.2m/s) in 13.10, from USA’s World Champion Allen Johnson (13.45) and Europe’s Stanislavs Olijars (13.58).
**Jackson was subsequently disqualified.
