Men's Triple Jump

World Indoor and outdoor champion Walter Davis (USA) put this competition beyond reach in the second round with a 17.54m effort, his second furthest win of the summer season.

Brazil’s and the Americas' Jadel Gregorio responded well in the same round with his day’s best of 17.41m, that ultimately secured second place.

Third position was taken by Romania’s Olympic silver and World Championships bronze medallist Marian Oprea who had briefly led the opening round of jumps with a 17.05m attempt, before the Brazilian had produced his first leap of 17.20m later in the jumping order.

These three were the only men beyond 17m in what was a straightforward and not exactly spectacular competition.

Gregorio did go beyond Davis’ winning distance in the third series of jumps but this feat was achieved with a huge foot foul, and so obviously played no part in the final standings.

"The positive is that all my jumps were good today," said Davis. "I wanted to close my season with first place in the World Cup."
