Dresden, Germany - In a combination High Jump and Pole Vault meeting at the Margon Arena, Poland’s 2009 World Championships Pole Vault gold medallist Anna Rogowska of Poland provided the highlight of the 8th Dresden Springermeeting with a world-leading clearance of 4.63m on Friday (25).

It was a minimalist effort for Rogowska as she passed until 4.42m, with six women still in the competition. Needing only one jump at that height, only she and Czech Republic’s 2012 European outdoor champion Jirina Svobodova, who cleared on her third attempt, remained as the bar went to 4.52m.

The Pole then became briefly a spectator at that height as she watched Svobodova unsuccessfullytry to stay alive.

Already the winner, Rogowska then called for 4.63m.  After not getting off the pole on her first attempt, she cleared easily on her second.

Considering that tonight was her season debut, it was perhaps surprising that Rogowska continued on to 4.72m, where her third attempt was a creditable effort.

Russian high jumper Sergey Mudrov, the former European junior champion, was also competing for the first time this year and jumped sparingly, succeeding with his first tries at 2.14m and 2.22m before securing victory by going over 2.29m on his second attempt.  He ended the evening with three unsuccessful leaps at 2.32m.

Only one week after his personal best of 2.30m on home soil in Bucharest, Romania’s Mihai Donisan of Romania went over 2.26m to take second on a countback against local jumper Matthias Haverney.

Mention should be made of the excellent presentation of the two vertical jump events, with the competitors alternating jumps and vaults.

Bar raises never occurred at the same time so the program moved seamlessly all evening with no empty pauses for measuring. Even at the end, Rogowska and Mudrov both took their climactic final attempts one after the other.
