Report: Women’s Pole Vault qualifying – Moscow 2013

Like so many of the other first rounds held on the second day of these championships, the women’s Pole Vault qualifying saw few surprises as all the top contenders safely made it through, led by home favourite Yelena Isinbayeva.

The Russian World record-holder was one of three athletes to enter the qualifying round at 4.55m, the others being Olympic champion Jenn Suhr and defending World champion Fabiana Murer.

Isinbayeva popped over at the first time of asking, while Suhr did so on her second attempt and Murer avoided a disaster with a third-time clearance at that height.

Aside from Isinbayeva, three other women enjoyed a faultless record. Germany’s Silke Spiegelburg, Russia’s Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova and European champion Jirina Svobodova of the Czech Republic all cleared 4.45m and 4.55m with no misses, sailing through to the final.

The automatic qualifying standard had been set at 4.60m, but exactly 12 women were left before the bar even reached that mark.

There was a minor scare for world leader Yarisley Silva. The Cuban, who has set Central American and Caribbean record of 4.90m this year, needed all three tries at 4.55m, but eventually got over it to advance to the final.

The most notable exits came from Germany’s Carolin Hingst, who has cleared 4.71m this year, and 2009 World champion Anna Rogowska, the latter failing to register a valid mark.
