Edmonton Surplus Shows Legacy Value of IAAF World Championships

15 October 2001 – Monte Carlo – The IAAF is delighted to learn that the 2001 Edmonton World Championships achieved an additional US $3,000,000 profit which will now be ploughed back into Canadian Athletics.

In total, this edition of the World Championships will leave a legacy of almost $8,000,000 to the sport.

Bearing in mind that this edition of the World Championships was the first to be held in North America, a developing market for athletics, it is little wonder that there are so many cities eager to host the IAAF’s biggest event, especially in countries where athletics is considered a major sport.

IAAF President Lamine Diack said: “This confirms that Edmonton was not only a great success in technical and organizational terms, but also, thanks to the skill of the Local Organising Committee, financially. Athletes in Canada will benefit from these Championships in real, practical terms. One should also take into account the incalculable benefits in terms of publicity and image that the successful staging of this event brings to a city, and a country.  Without a doubt, Edmonton has proved that the World Championships deserves its status as the third most important sporting event in the world.”
