Men's Long Jump Final

26 year-old Ivan Pedroso (CUB) won his third consecutive title in this event jumping 8.56m. He has become the first man in the history of the Championships to obtain three long jump gold medals, leaving behind Carl Lewis ('83 and '87) and Mike Powell ('91 and '93). The Spaniard Yago Lamela took  the silver medal, thus repeating his position at the 1999 World Indoor Championships (behind Pedroso). He jumped 8.40, 16 centimetres less than his personal best earlier this year.
After the first round Lamela headed the event, with 8.34, while Pedroso jumped only 8.19 and was third behind Gregor Cankar (SLO) with 8.20. In the second round Lamela made a foul and Pedroso and Cankar jumped 8.33 and 8.32. The third round was the decisive one. The Cuban jumped 8.56 and his rivals could not come near to his performance. For a few minutes Cankar took the second position with 8.36, but Lamela replied immediately with 8.40, both performances in the fourth round. The only good jump of the two last rounds was Lamela's last attempt of 8.39, which was not enough to change the podium arrangement: Pedroso, Lamela, Cankar.
Hombres Longitud Final
