23 October 2000 – New York - Joseph Chebet of Kenya and Adriana Fernandez of Mexico will defend their titles in the 31st running of the New York City Marathon on November 5, race organisers announced on Monday.

The 30-year-old Chebet improved on a pair of runner-up finishes the previous two years by winning the 1999 New York City Marathon in two hours, nine minutes and 14 seconds for a victory margin of just six seconds ahead of Domingos Castro of Portugal.

Chebet, who had won the Boston Marathon seven months earlier, became the first runner to win the two most important long distance races in the United States in the same year since Alberto Salazar in 1982.

Fernandez, 29, also improved on a 1998 runner-up finish with her victory last year in 2:25:06, the second fastest New York City Marathon time ever by a woman.

The defending women's champion will be looking to improve on her performances earlier this year. She finished fourth in the London Marathon and placed 16th at the Sydney Olympics.Fernandez ran her career-best of 2:24:06 in finishing second at London in April 1999.
