Report: women's triple jump qualifying – Sopot 2014

There were only two automatic qualifiers in the women’s triple jump, with Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams and Ukraine’s Olga Saladukha going over the standard of 14.30m.

Williams, fifth two years ago in Istanbul, and 2011 IAAF World Championships gold medallist Saladukha both clinched their place in Sunday’s final with their first jumps of 14.35m and 14.31m respectively.

Jumpers generally don’t like morning qualifying competitions and that appeared to be true of the Russian joint 2014 world leader Yekaterina Konova, who was definitely below her best but still qualified third with 14.20m.

With only 11 women in the qualifying competition, China’s Li Yanmei found that 13.73m was still sufficient to progress to the final.

Of the three women eliminated, perhaps the best known was South American record holder Keila Costa, the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships long jump bronze medallist.
