25 November 2001 – Monte Carlo - Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR) and Stacy Dragila (USA) have been announced as Athletes of the Year 2001.

The winners were announced live on stage at the Sporting d’Ete of Monte-Carlo by HSH Prince Albert of Monaco, the Honorary President of the Foundation, and Lamine Diack, President of the Foundation and of the IAAF.

The other men's finalists were Andre Bucher (SUI) and Maurice Greene (USA). In the women's contest the other finalists were Marion Jones and Osleidys Menendez (CUB).

Michael Johnson, who has won 5 Olympic golds and is world record holder at 200m (19.32) and 400m (43.18), was given the prestigious “Distinguished Career Award”.

Born September 14, 1974
1500m pb: 3:26.00 (1998, world record)
2001 best: 3:26.12
World record holder at 1500m, One Mile & 2000m. Fifty-one wins from his last
53 finals at 1500m, including three world titles outdoors. Played in goal
for his local football club until age 15.
In 2001: Winner of all 13 of his races, including  world titles indoors at
3000m and outdoors at 1500m, and five Golden Leagues. Also won the IAAF
Grand Prix title at 1500m after having clocked the second-fastest time ever,
3:26.12, in Brussels

Stacy Dragila (USA)
Born March 25, 1971
Pole Vault pb: 4.81 (2001, world record)
Reigning Olympic and twice World Champion. Setter of 15 world records
indoors and out, including unratified (but authentic) marks. In 2001:
Retained her world title outdoors and set seven world records, culminating with 4.81 in Palo Alto on June 9. Won 22 of her 25 contests including Edmonton, the Goodwill Games and the IAAF Grand Prix Final.

The World Athletics Gala 2001 is organised in collaboration with the EBU,the IAAF, the Compagnie Monégasque de Banque and MONDO.
