Hello everyone!

It’s been over a month since I put on a pair of spikes, as I decided to take 6 weeks off after my very last race in Madrid (giving me a break until 5 November).

I would like to mention a few things that capped my 2002 season in Europe. The most thrilling performance of the year came in Monaco where I ran a 3:27:91, which is my second fastest time ever. I tried some different tactics this year instead of trailing Hicham all the time. Monaco was the first time that I glued onto the pace-makers instead of watching for Hicham and adjusting to his tempo. Although at times it seemed successful, I still feel that I have to work on some more tactics to try to win more races.

Another key to this year was my performance in Brussels. I had run 3:26:34 last year and this year I was expecting a similar race if not better! Unfortunately, Brussels ended up being just an important morale booster after a disappointment in the previous race in Zurich. Wilfred Meert had worked very hard for a great showdown between Hicham and myself. I was pleased with the results and of course, I was happy with the great Brussels fans that are crazy about distance running.

After the Grand Prix Final, I was invited by Hicham to go to his birthday party. Wow, that guy can put on a party – dance, drum and sing! He is such a different person off the track! I ate lots of Moroccan delicacies and enjoyed the entertainment. It’s nice to see him relaxed and enjoying himself after another successful season. Although our rivalry and competition on the track is strictly business, we get along very well off the track.

For the off-season, I decided to accompany my girlfriend to her internship instead of going on a vacation. I have been catching up on a lot of sleep and of course, a lot of eating! I am proud to say that I have gained some kilos and look a lot healthier than you normally see me by the end of the season. I guess that’s what happens when you have a girlfriend that is a nutritionist too!

I plan to run a few races in the indoor season, but my main concentration for 2003 is the World Championship in Paris. Of course Hicham will remain the biggest threat to everyone, but I also have to keep an eye out for the upcoming athletes. Nothing is for sure in this sport, so I have to continue to work hard and strive for 100% all the time. I look forward to starting my training in my new home in Tucson, Arizona. We will have a fantastic training group consisting of Jean Patrick Nduwimana, Lassiter Seneca, David Krummenacker, and myself. I am also very happy to find out that my brother will be coming to school at the University of Arizona.

I wish everybody all the best and hope the athletes are enjoying their time off.  Best of luck to the high school and collegiate cross country runners who are working hard right now.

Well, that’s all for now!
