A record 22,034 entries have been received for the 20th Hamburg Marathon on 24 April 2005, 4000 more than are officially permitted to run through the streets of the north German city.

But the organisers are not going to send out any letters refusing entry as they expect an 18,000 strong field on the day to complete the course, allowing for the inevitable no-shows that should reduce the field to an acceptable level.
