Track greats battle for federation position

()

Gabriela Szabo and Violeta Beclea are opponents once more, but this time it is not on the track.

The Romanian pair were fierce rivals on over 1500 metres and  will be most remembered for the 1500m final at the 2000 Olympic games when Beclea won the silver and Szabo got the bronze.

But now in retirement they will go head-to-head once more, this time in the race to become vice-president of the Romanian Athletics Federation.

A vote will take place on 14 April, and Beclea said it was an honour to be considered.

"I didn't know that I had been proposed, but I am honoured by the trust they have put in me," she said. "It doesn't matter what it (their rivalry) was in the past, especially as we'll certainly meet again on other lists in the future,'' added Beclea about her fellow Romanian.
