The first inauguration of a MONDO track in the Netherlands proved to be a successful one as 14 stadium records fell and another 8 National Track Circuit records were broken at the 14th edition of the Mondo Keien Meeting in Uden last Saturday, 3th of August.

Kelly Sotherton of Great Brittan proved to be a strong contender for a medal at the World Championships in Osaka in three weeks time as she showed she is in great shape.

She won the 100m Hurdles in a time of 13.31, the 200m in a new personal best of 23.44 and she threw the shot to a distance of 14.06m. Karin Ruckstuhl, herself a world class heptathlete, couldn’t keep up but was satisfied with her own performance as she came out of an intense training period.

The men’s 100m was the spectacle the crowd had hoped for. Ricardo Williams won in 10.25 with Mickey Grimes in second (10.26) and Bernard Williams in third (10.27). Former World champion Kim Collins, finished 4th in 10.34.

Bernard Williams, silver medal winner at the Olympics, got his revenge in the 200m where he posted a season’s best of 20.47 for the win.

The high hurdles duel between European Indoor Champion Gregory Sedoc of the Netherlands and Joel Brown was disrupted when Sedoc heavily touched the fourth hurdle and had to give up. Brown won unchallenged in 13.56.

Dutchman Gert Jan Liefers made his return on the track after a long period of injuries and won the B-race in the 1500m in 3.45.44 while American Jon Rankin won the A-race in 3.37.19. The 5000m was won by little known Moroccan Aziz El Idrissi in 13.24.27 while his fellow countryman Jamel Chatbi broke the 3000m Steeplechase stadium record of European record holder Simon Vroemen with a 8.29.13 run.

Great Brittan’s Celia Brown ran a 2.02.04 solo race in the 800m women while American Tiffany McWilliams prevailed in the 1500m: 4.12.58. Erica Martenssons (SWE) qualified for the World Championships in Osaka by winning the 400m Hurdles in a new personal best of 56.42 and Reggie Witherspoon (USA) won the 400m flat in 45.97.

Frank Casanas of Cuba won the discus competition with 64.68m beating Osaka bound Erik Cadee of the Netherlands in second: 60.34m.

The men decathletes took part in a new experience which was called “the Keien Meerkamp”.
The points of the first three events (100m, Long Jump, Shot Put) were calculated back into seconds that were given as a head start in the final 800m. Therefore the athlete that crossed the finish line first was also the actual winner of the combined 4 events. Joost van Bennekom of the Netherlands won the event with 3113 points.

A duel meet between Great Brittan and the Netherlands in the jump events also delivered some outstanding results as Jade Johnson won the Long Jump with 6.39m and Tom Parsons chattered the High Jump stadium record with a 2.27m clearance.
