Monte-Carlo - Berhane Adere’s World indoor 5000m record at the Stuttgart Sparkassen Cup on Saturday (31 Jan) is undoubtedly not only the top performance of the week in the latest round of IAAF World Rankings, but is also the best performance of the season to date.

The 30-year-old Ethiopian who is the reigning World Champion both indoors (3000m) and outdoors (10,000m) improved Romanian Gabriela Szabo’s 5000m indoor mark by more than eight seconds to 14:39.29 (1404 points Performance Score). The result reinforced Adere’s position at the top of her Event Ranking ahead of compatriot Werknesh Kidane, as she improved her average by nine points to 1413. Adere also strengthened her 5th place in the Women’s Overall Ranking.

World outdoor Pole Vault record holder Yelena Isinbayeva began slowly to close the gap between herself and Event Ranking leader Svetlana Feofanova. Isinbayeva won in Stuttgart with 4.68m (1278 points P.S.) and improved her average by a single point to 1344. Feofanova is still ahead by 31 points.

Reigning men’s World Shot champion, Andrey Mikhnevich re-entered the IAAF World Rankings this week. The giant from Belarus won the national championships in Minsk with a new indoor personal best of 20.85m (1211 points P.S.) and returned to the Event Ranking in 4th place, just one point ahead of Christian Cantwell of the United States.

Mikhnevich’s compatriot and European Junior Champion, Dmitriy Valyukevich, stepped up two places to 10th in the Men’s Triple Jump Event Ranking. Valyukevich finished third at the Samara Governor Cup with a new indoor personal best of 17.31m (1234 points P.S.)

Cuban legend Ivan Pedroso is back in action after a long rest due to injury following Paris last summer. The 31-year-old finished third at the Russian Winter meet in Moscow with 8.01m (1198 points P.S.) and re-entered the Event Ranking in 13th place.

Pedroso’s compatriot, Yuniel Hernandez moved up nearly a dozen places to 15th in the Event Ranking which covers the Hurdling disciplines for 110m outdoors – 60m indoors. Hernandez – only 22 years old – took the honours at the Sparkassen Cup in Stuttgart by winning in 7.57 (1290 points P.S.).

Another high hurdler moving into the top-20 in the Event Ranking but on the women’s side, is Jamaica’s Delloreen Ennis-London. The Central American Champion and 2000 Olympic finalist set a new personal best in Stuttgart when finishing second in 7.95 (1277 points P.S.) and moved up to 16th place in the Event Ranking.
