Mombasa, Kenya - Daegu and Moscow were proclaimed today in Mombasa as respectively the hosts of the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, bringing closure to an election campaign that began in April 2006, when a record number of nine candidates submitted letters of intent to host the 2011 edition of the event.
 
After declaring the final results, IAAF President Lamine Diack addressed the press conference room, which was packed to the rafters with bid delegates, IAAF representatives and Media, who were waiting to hear his announcement:

“I am convinced that each of these cities is more than capable of hosting excellent editions of our World Championships, but in every competition we have to have winners and losers. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank each bidding city for becoming a candidate city for the 2011 and 2013 World Championships in Athletics – the IAAF’s most important competition.”

“The IAAF has been very pleased to have had four great cities in the race – from three different continents – and they have all showed outstanding professionalism and enthusiasm throughout the bid process. They have also demonstrated strong support from political and other authorities, and a glance at the list of VIPs who have made the long trip to Mombasa to support their bids, shows that they consider the World Championships to be more than just a sporting event.”

“By taking part in this race, the bidding cities have shown the best of themselves and have promoted Athletics as a major and universal sport. It should not be forgotten that when the Evaluation process began, we had interest from a record nine countries from five continents, so I consider that the final four candidates who arrived in Mombasa should be proud of getting this far. I sincerely hope that those who were not successful this time return with another bid in the future.”

The election of the winning host cities, was given a full day of the IAAF Council meeting in Mombasa, and took the form of excellent audiovisual presentations from each bidding city and discussion of the final report produced by the IAAF's evaluation team. Although the votes will not be publicised, each winning candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first rounds of voting (at least 13 votes).

The 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics will be held in Osaka, Japan in 2007, and the 12th edition of the championships will be hosted by Berlin, Germany in 2009.
