The International Fair Play Committee (CIFP) announced on Monday (18) that Turkey’s Beijing double Olympic medallist Elvan Abeylegesse has won their top award in recognition of her good sportsmanship.
The CIFP awarded Abeylegesse, the first Turkish athlete ever to set a track and field World record, the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy, a prize given for a gesture of fair play.
Last summer at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin Abeylegesse lent her spare track shoes to Ethiopian athlete Meselech Melkamu just 15 minutes before the start of the women’s 10,000m final. Melkamu, who left her own spikes in her hotel room, went on to win the silver medal in the race, while Abeylegesse was forced to quit in the seventh lap.
“I am very surprised and happy as well to receive this prize,” said Abeylegesse.
In addition there were other awards for Athletics:
World Half Marathon record holder Lornah Kiplagat (NED) will receive the Fair Play Diploma in the category Sports career in the spirit of Fair Play with regard to her extensive charitable work including that of her own Foundation which was founded in 2007 to help support talented but less privileged women in Kenya, taking care that they get a good education in combination with sport.
Karolina Kotowicz (POL) will receive the Fair Play Letter of Congratulation in the category Act of Fair Play. Kotowicz, a school athlete noticed a mistake in the result of the finals of the Polish School League an athletics competition in which she had participated. She very honestly notified the organisers to change the results even though it led to her school dropping from 3rd to 5th position overall.

Le prix du Fair Play décerné à Elvan Abeylegesse!
Le Comité international du Fair Play (CIFP) a annoncé hier (lundi 18 janvier) que la double médaillée olympique turque aux Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008, Elvan Abeylegesse, a remporté leur prix principal, en reconnaissance de son excellent esprit sportif.
Le CIFP a en effet attribué à Abeylegesse - première représentante turque à établir un record du monde d'athlétisme - le Trophée mondial du Fair Play Pierre de Coubertin, décerné en reconnaissance d'un geste de sportivité hors pair.
L'été dernier, lors des 12es Championnats du Monde de l'IAAF de Berlin 09, Abeylegesse avait prêté son unique paire de chaussures à pointes de rechange à l'Éthiopienne Meselech Melkamu, quinze minutes tout juste avant le départ de la finale du 10 000m femmes. Melkamu, qui avait oublié ses propres pointes dans sa chambre d'hôtel, a terminé seconde de la course. Abeylegesse, elle, a dû abandonner lors du septième tour.
"Je suis aussi surprise que ravie de recevoir ce prix," a déclaré Abeylegesse.

Ainsi la Néerlandaise Lornah Kiplagat, détentrice du record du monde du semi-marathon recevra le Diplôme du Fair Play du CIFP dans la catégorie "carrières sportives". Celui-ci est remis pour l'ensemble d'une carrière menée dans un esprit de sportivité et revient à Kiplagat en reconnaissance de tous ses efforts consentis en faveur d'œuvres caritatives, notamment au travers de sa propre fondation. Celle-ci, créée en 2007, a pour objectif d'apporter un soutien aux femmes kenyanes de milieux modestes douées pour le sport, et vise à leur assurer une éducation de bon niveau, en conjonction avec le développement de leur talent sportif.
La Polonaise Karolina Kotowicz recevra une lettre de félicitations dans la catégorie "Geste de Fair Play". Kotowicz a relevé une erreur lors de la publication des résultats d'une finale d'athlétisme des écoles polonaises à laquelle elle avait participé. Très honnête, elle en a aussitôt avisé les organisateurs afin qu'ils puissent rectifier les résultats, ce qui a eu pour effet de faire passer l'école de Karolina de la troisième à la cinquième place du classement général final.
