Wieczisk, former IAAF Council Member dies at 89

MonteCarloIt is with great sadness that the IAAF has learnt that Georg Wieczisk, Honorary Life Personal Member of the IAAF and a former IAAF and EAA Council Member, died on Thursday 27 October 2011 in Berlin, Germany, at the age of 89 years.


Georg Wieczisk, as a representative of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany, was a Member of the IAAF Council which was elected at the 28th IAAF Congress in 1972 held in Munich, and he served until 1991. He was also part of the IAAF Organisation Working Group, from 1984 to 1987.


Wieczisk, Honorary President of the German athletics federation (DLV), was a former President of DVfL (1959 to 1990) which was the national federation for East Germany, and from 1970 to 1987 Wieczisk was a Council Member of the European Athletics Association.


The IAAF mourns his passing and offers its deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.
