Wind and chill impact the action in Austin - Texas Relays day 3
Austin, USA - It was cold and windy, then warm and windy and then cold and windy again, and performances reflected it on the third day of the Texas Relays, as most of the action consisted of qualifying races and high school events.
Three university men's 4x100 teams qualified for Saturday's final in sub-40-second times -- Texas A&M (39.26), Louisiana State ((39.73) and Florida State (39.84) -- the latter sans Walter Dix, whose appearances are beginning to take on an air of mystery. The women's leading 4x100 qualifiers were Louisiana State at 44.19 and Texas A&M at 44.50.
The men's Discus Throw provided an upset when UCLA's Greg Garza, the fifth-ranked American in 2007, was beaten on a last-round throw by Clendon Henderson of Liberty University. Henderson, who came into the meet with a PB of 60.44 metres, raised it to 61.11 with his first throw and then to 62.26 with his last one. Garza was second with 61.51, and Martin Meric of California third with 61.13.
The women's discus was won by D'Andra Carter, youngest daughter of 1984 Olympic shot put silver medalist Michael Carter. Carter's winning throw of 55.62 was a PB by more than half a metre. Her elder sister, Michelle, is favored to win Saturday's Shot Put competition.
Jumping, usually a feature of Friday's competition, was flat. The best performance of the day was Reindell Cole's 7.94, and it was helped along by a semi-gale-force gust of 5.3 m/s.
