20 June 2001 - Dakar - During the 41st Senegalese Championships which took place last 16 and 17 June at the Leopold Senghor Stadium in Dakar, a new 5000m national record was set by a 13 year old from Casamance.

Mama Badiane covered the distance in 18:36.1 and bettered the old mark of 18:51.32 to become the youngest-ever national record holder in the history of Senegalese athletics.

In the absence of the best Senegalese athletes who are currently preparing the Games of the Francophonie in a training camp in France, it is the new wave of young talents that has established the best performances in Dakar.  First of all Fatou Binetou Fall who clocked 23.8 for the 200m and 53.9 for the 400m, Papa Serigene Diène (47.8 for the 400m) and El Hadji Mbow (54.3 for the 400m hurdles). Still juniors, these athletes will certainly come to the front international scene in the years to come.
