MonteCarloThe eyes of the athletics world will be on the Principality of Monaco next weekend. On Sunday 12 November, the prestigious annual World Athletics Gala will be hosted at the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d’Eté, Monte-Carlo by International Athletic Foundation (IAF) Honorary President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack.

The highlight of the evening will of course be the announcement of the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year, with the winners being announced live on stage.

The Gala will also give the Athletics family the opportunity to honour other outstanding athletic achievements via the Performance of the Year, Distinguished Career, Rising Star, and Coaches’ Awards.

The Gala’s 600+ guests, who will include many of world’s top athletics stars, past and present, will be entertained by the musical beat and rhythms of South African jazz, folk singing legend Miriam Makeba. The Grammy award winning performer - Africa’s first - has performed for popes, presidents, heads of state, in a career spanning more than four decades.

Making for a diverse programme of events in the Principality, Sunday morning will also see the running of the tenth edition of the Monaco Marathon. From its starting point outside the HQ of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the Boulevard des Moulins, to the finish of the 42.195km distance at the Stade Louis II in the district of Fontvieille, the ‘Marathon de Monaco et des Riviera’ traverses the borders of three countries.

A two-day meeting of the IAAF Council, Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 November, will conclude the packed schedule which will also include meetings of the Athletics’ World Plan Steering Group, various IAAF Commissions, and of the IAF Council.
