Kenyan Lezan Kimutai won yesterday's adidas Dublin Marathon in a course record time of 2:13:08, taking 37 seconds off the 21-year old mark of Ireland's Jerry Kiernan. It was the 25th Anniversary running of the race.

Kimutai who was second last year, was running in the Irish capital for the third time, while first home in the women’s division was Russian Yelena Burykina in a time of 2:32:53. The Russian was also runner-up last year.

Kimutai, 32, was fifth in Dublin in 2002 where he ran his previous personal best of 2:16:13, and he won last year's Belfast Marathon (2:17:09).

Burykina, who is the same age as the Kenyan, also set her personal best in Dublin but her time of 2:28:09 came when finishing second last year. Significantly, she was third in this year's Rotterdam Marathon (2:30:15), and has shown wide ranging running ability with a track personal best of 4:08.74 for 1500m, set in 2003.

Of note, Ireland’s famous Eamonn Coghlan, who was the 1983 World 5000m champion, and is now 51 years-old, finished in 3:23.

Almost 10,500 runners took part on Monday, the biggest entry since 1982, with over 5500 coming from Ireland, and the rest from 63 different countries.
