Last week it was announced that a high jumping design by a nine-year-old girl from the English city of Bristol has been chosen as the first of a series of commemorative coins to be produced for the London Olympic Games of 2012.

The coin, depicting Athletics, was designed by Florence Jackson as part of a competition run by Blue Peter, a highly regarded children's television programme on the BBC.

The competition had over 17,000 entrants and the winning entrant was selected by a panel comprised of LOCOG Sport, LOCOG Commercial, The IOC and the Royal Mint. As a final sign off the design was also approved by Her Majesty the Queen.

“I chose the High Jump because I’d watched it on TV and thought it looked fun,” said Florence Jackson.

It is the first time that a child has designed a British coin, and last week Florence Jackson was joined at the Royal Mint by Denise Lewis, the 2000 Olympic Heptathlon gold medallist, to see the first of the 50pence coins struck. The coin will be available next year.

“Florence has done all Olympians and Paralympians proud. Her design is simple and effective,” said Denise Lewis.
