The IAAF/CAIXA World Half Marathon Championships 2008 which take place in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday 12 October are at the hub of a long weekend of intense road running activity in the Brazilian city.

The annual Rio de Janeiro Half Marathon, a mass race with approximately 16,000 participants which was first held in 1997, will start at the same time as the Men’s race of World Half Marathon Championships, which begins 30 minutes after the women’s championship title contenders set-off.

All the races are run on the same point to point course, with most of the route following the coast and the beaches of Rio from West to East. There is a steep incline and decline from 1 km to 4 km then the route is flat. There is a U-Turn at approximately 19 km, where athletes cross the central reservation and turn back for the finish in the Flamengo Park.
