A marathon is born

KisumuKenya - Another Kenyan marathon is born. Following the Mombasa Marathon, now firmly established after a number of years, the latest is the Great Lakes Marathon, with a course traced on the roads of Kisumu, facing the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria.

The initiative belongs to Moses Tanui, one of the all-time great marathon runners (winner, amongst others, of two editions of the Boston Marathon and second-placed in Chicago this year with 2:06:16, third best performance of all-time), in addition to being world 10,000m champion and a great cross country specialist (silver medallist two years running at the World Cross Country Championships, in 1990 and 1991). Tanui himself headed the organisation, benefitting from the experience gained running in some of the most famous marathons around the world.

Run on 11 December, the conditions were far from ideal: temperatures between 30-35°C...
