On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon (25), in the presence of the Algerian Minister of Sport, 15 national teams took part in the 15th edition of the World University Cross Country Championships on a course set out across the golf course of Dély Ibrahim.

There were two races on the programme with men and women competing for both individual and team honours. In the men’s division, squads were composed of a maximum of six competitors per country with the top four home scoring team points, while in the women’s category, the first 3 in each team scored points.

The women ran a distance of 5.82km, and the title was taken by the hosts' Souad Aït Salem, who broke away from the field around 3km, and took a ten second victory over the Briton Kate Reed. Following this pair home more distantly were two other Britons who occupied the next two places, so securing the team title ahead of Algeria. Third team place was taken by Ireland.

Souad Aït Salem, 27, took the Mediterranean Games 10,000m title last summer and was the triple Pan-Arab Games winner at 5000m, 10,000m and Half Marathon in 2004, as well as being African 10,000m champion in 2000. After taking her win she praised the efforts of her coach Abdellah Mahour Bacha, and said was delighted to have won the title on home soil.

In the men’s race the Moroccans dominated the 9.45km race, taking the first four places, with the medals being taken in order by Mohamed Fadel - who dedicated his victory to his family and the whole of Morocco - Abdelkrim Laâmouchi, and Abdelaziz Azzouzi.

The first of the home runners across the line was Nabil Zerouak, helping the Algerians take overall second spot as a team. Spain were third.
