Havana, CubaWorld and Olympic medallist Yarelis Barrios produced her best effort at home and the fourth farthest in her career as she threw the Discus to 65.60m to lead the performances at the International Barrientos Memorial, which also served as the Cuban National Championships over the weekend.

Barrios opened the championships on Friday with a massive 65.60m, close to her personal best of 66.13m from 2008, to move up to the third spot on the 2010 world lists.

The Berlin silver medallist opened with 64.64m and after two fouls released the Discus to 65.60m. She fouled in the fifth round and ended her series with another massive 64.65m.

“I was anxious to compete. It is a different story when you compete in front of the crowd. I am sure I will have a great season and I look forward to the Diamond League in 2010,” said the 26-year old, who had already thrown 65.04m earlier this month.

Barrios currently trails Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic (66.85m) and Australia’s World champion Dani Samuels (65.84m) this season.

Yanisley Collado (63.20m) was a decent second, followed by Denia Caballero and junior Yahimí Pérez, both with 59.30m.

Giralt and Copello duke it out in the Triple Jump

Two-time World indoor championships medallist David Giralt, Alexis Copello, and 2008 World junior champion Dailenys Alcántara (14.55m/w) to produce the most notable performances in the Triple Jump.

Fresh off their great performance at the World Indoor Champs a week earlier in Doha, 60m Hurdles champion Dayron Robles and runner-ups Yoandri Betanzos and Yargelis Savigne took a well deserved rest, as well as fourth place finisher Anay Tejeda (60m Hurdles).

Two other medallists at the Qatari capital excelled. Third placer Giralt’s second round effort of 17.31m prevailed over Berlin bronze medallist Copello (17.28m).

William Collazo, a surprise 400m runner-up in Doha, dominated the one-lap race in hand timed 46.0 seconds.

Yordani García became the first man to score over 8,000 points in the Decathlon this year as he tallied 8,381. World and Olympic medallist Leonel Suarez was resting from his world indoor championships debut. First day leader Yunior Diaz dropped out after completing the Discus. He had failed to finish the 110m Hurdles.

There were high expectations on multiple World and Olympic medallist Yipsi Moreno’s return to the Hammer circle after becoming mother in 2009, as well as former Javelin world record holder Osleidys Menendez’ season’s debut.

However, they felt they were not ready yet and will start their 2010 campaign at a later date.

Moya back in action

The crowd was pleased to see 2005 World Championships silver medallist Victor Moya back to the High Jump, after undergoing surgery in 2008. A 2.15m leap with a five step run-up suggests he should progressively return to his pre-surgery level.

Other notable results came on the field as Jorge Fernández took the men’s Discus with 62.93m, just over a week after his massive 66m. Berlin silver medallist Guillermo Martínez threw the Javelin to 81.20m. He already achieved 86.38m in late February.

Honduras’ Rolando Palacios was the only foreign winner as he took a narrow victory in 200m with 20.4. Athletes from México and Costa Rica also competed.

Hand timing prevented sprinter from scoring official results for the World Lists.

Following a remarkable five-medal tally at the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Cuban athletes look forward to the Diamond League as their next main goal for 2010.
