Belgian 5000m runner Compernolle dies in car accident

Belgian 5000m runner Tom Compernolle died in a car accident on 16 June at the age of 32. Compernolle was an army professional and he died on duty when the military vehicle that he was driving in went off the road and crashed.

Compernolle set a personal best of 13:14.75 at 5000m in 2004 and competed in the Athens Olympic Games. Compernolle won national titles on the track and in cross country. In his last competition in Leiden (NED) on 14 June he finished third in a 3000m in 8:14.36.

Compernolle was a substitute in the Belgian team for the European Cup. The Belgian team will be wearing a black ribbon in Leiria in honour of their team mate.
