Monte-Carlo – During the celebrations of the World Athletics Gala hosted by International Athletic Foundation (IAF) Honorary President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack in the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d’Eté, Monte Carlo, on Sunday 23 November, 22-year-old Jamaican Usain Bolt and Russia’s 26-year-old Yelena Isinbayeva were crowned as the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year 2008.
Bolt, who captivated the attention of the sporting world with his Olympic 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold medals, each with a World record performance, commented:
“I have a motto that anything is possible. But this really is such an honour.”
"Just to be included with every great name in the sport is wonderful. I’ll try to do it year after year."
Undefeated in nine outdoor competitions this year, Isinbayeva raised her own World record on three occasions and defended her Olympic title, also with a World record. Also the World Athlete of the Year for 2004 and 2005, Isinbayeva commented:
“I’m very proud. It feels like the first time after getting over my difficulties of 2006 and 2007. I will make a very special place of honour for this trophy.”
"I knew it was going to be difficult over the past two seasons. I was very confident that I could break through the wall.”

**Exceptionally, considering the incredible depth of candidates for the Performance of the Year award, the International Athletic Foundation Panel decided to extend the number of finalists to the top 5, and make awards to two female athletes.

Bolt et Isinbayeva sacrés Athlètes mondiaux de l’année 2008
Monte-Carlo – A l'occasion du Gala mondial de l'athlétisme, organisée sous l’égide du président d'honneur de l'IAF (la Fondation Internationale de l'Athlétisme), SAS le Prince Albert II de Monaco et du président de l'IAF et de l'IAAF, Lamine Diack, dans la Salle des Etoiles du Sporting Club d'Eté, le dimanche 23 novembre, les Athlètes mondiaux de l'année 2008 ont été désignés. Les élus cette année sont le Jamaïcain Usain Bolt et la Russe Yelena Isinbayeva.
"Ma devise, c’est que tout est possible, mais ceci est un tel honneur, a déclaré Bolt, qui s'est illustré aux yeux de la planète entière avec des titres olympiques, tous assortis d'un record du monde, sur 100m, 200m et 4x100m. Me retrouver ainsi en compagnie de tous ces grands noms du sport est merveilleux. Je vais tenter de réussir ceci chaque année."
De son côté, Isinbayeva, invaincue en neuf sorties en plein air cette année, a amélioré son propre record du monde trois fois et conservé son titre olympique de 2004, avec également un record du monde à la clé.
"Je me sens très fière. A chaque fois, c’est toujours comme la première fois, a acquiescé Yelena Isinbayeva, déjà couronnée Athlète de l’année à deux reprises par le passé, en 2004 et 2005. Les deux dernières années n'ont pas été faciles, et j'ai l'impression de vraiment refaire surface. Mais j'ai toujours été confiante que j'allais réussir à revenir au tout premier plan. Ce trophée aura une place à part chez moi."
