Brazil dominated the 39th edition of the South American Junior Championships, held at the track of the “Estadio Alfonso Galvis Duque” in Medellín, Colombia on 23-25 September. The altitude of 1495m above sea level always provides great conditions for sprinting, and the event produced several quality performances.

Sprint double for de Liz

Perhaps the most outstanding athlete of the meet was 15 year-old Tamiris de Liz, who won the 100/200m double with personal bests of 11.43 and 23.35. The latter is a new Championship record, National Junior record, and South American Youth (U-18) record.

De Liz is a promising young sprinter born in Joinville (State of Santa Catarina) on 18 November 1995, 1.74m tall and 56Kg. Margit Weise, a former Brazilian champion and South American Championship medallist at 400m Hurdles, coaches her. On the Brazilian circuit she represents Club Corville. Medellín was de Liz’s second international participation after she competed at the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, where she was sixth at 100m, and a semi-finalist at 200m.

Braian Toledo and Eider Arévalo in good form

Argentina’s Braian Toledo (8 September 1993), the 2010 Youth Olympic Champion in the Javelin Throw, also shined in Medellín while setting a Championship record of 74.04m. This is Toledo’s first title at this Championship. His series: 68.99m, 66.56m, 71.40m, 71.62m, 73.06m, and 74.04m.

Colombia’s Eider Arévalo (9 March 1993), the 2010 Race Walking Cup junior champion won the 10,000m in 39:56.01, setting a new Championship record and a new National junior record, just shy of the legendary South American record of Ecuador’s Jefferson Pérez (39:50.73 from 1993).

In another remarkable performance, Brazilian Tamara de Souza (8 September 1993) won the Heptathlon with 5545 points, a personal best that moves her to the second spot in the all-time South American Junior lists behind the record of 5763 from Vanessa Spínola (2009). De Souza set personal bests in the 100m Hurdles, Shot Put and 200m, but still has lots of room for improvement in the 800m.

South American Junior Relay records

The closing day of the event witnessed the only South American Junior records of the Championships. The male Brazilian team won the 4x100m relay in 39.63, beating the previous mark of 39.64, set in 2002 and repeated in 2009, both times by Brazilian quartets. The team was composed by Rodrigo Rocha, Jackson da Silva, Flávio Barbosa, and Aldemar da Silva (the 100m champion). Colombia was second with a national junior record of 40.08.

The second South American Junior record was set in the female 4x400m race by the local team with 3:36.74, obliterating the previous mark of 3:40.56 set by Brazil in 2002. The Colombian team was: Melissa Torres, Janeth Largacha, Evelys Aguilar, and Rosa Angélica Escobar.

This was the second time that Medellín, the capital of the Antioquia Department, hosted the South American Junior Championships. The previous time had been in 1983. On this occasion, Brazil dominated the medal table with a total of 49 (22 gold), ahead of Colombia (10 gold, 40 total), and Argentina (4 gold, 11 total). Brazil also controlled the points classification.
