Former world champion high jumper Martin Buss has written off the 2004 season.

The five-times German champion, who claimed the World title in 2001 in Edmonton, has been suffering with a knee injury since early last year and has failed to recover in time to start training following a rehabilitation programme.

The 28-year-old must now fear for his career after missing the second successive year of competition, after undergoing several unsuccessful operations on his troublesome left knee.

The decision was made to write off the season after talks with Dr Wolfgang Killing, the man in charge of the German high jump team and was announced on the German Athletics Federation (DLV) website.
