Robert Cheruiyot, the reigning Boston City Marathon champion, won the 12km senior men’s race in 33:24 at the Nairobi Provincial Cross Country Championships, Saturday.

Sammy Karanja was second in 33:53, while John Kirui was placed third after crossing the line in 33:58.  Karanja had beaten Cheruiyot into second position in the 10km race which was associated with and run on the same day as last November’s Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon.

Cheruiyot preparations are aimed at his defence of his Boston title in April.

“I will race again at the National Cross Country Championships next Thursday as I want to get fully ready to defend my title in Boston in April,” said Cheruiyot.

In the men's 4km, Churchill Kipsang (10:37) was the easy winner, ahead of Caleb Ngetich (10:41) and Augustine Rono (10:46).
