18 November, 1998 - Monte Carlo - Tomorrow and Friday, the Council of the IAAF will hold its customary end of season meetings ahead of the World Athletic Gala ’98, which will take place on Sunday evening, 22 November, in the Salle des Etoiles of the Monte Carlo Summer Sporting, with the sponsorship of the Compagnie Monégasque de Banque (CMB) and MONDO S.p.A.

The main points on the Council’s agenda concern the choice of venue for a number of important events, including the World Indoor Championships 2001 and the IAAF World Championships in Athletics 2001.

Delegations from the prospective host cities for these two championships have already arrived in Monaco to set up stands promoting their candidatures in the Grand Prix B salon of the Hotel Loews, next to the room in which the Council will hold its discussions.

For the World Championships in Athletics 2001, the candidates are the cities of Edmonton (CAN), Stanford-San Francisco (USA), Paris and New Delhi. Candidates for the World Indoor Championships are Budapest, Lisbon and Borlange (SWE).

The Council will also hear status reports from the organisers of future World Championships, namely the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi (JPN) which takes place between 5-7 March, and the World Championships in Athletics in Seville (ESP) which runs from 20-29 August. In an effort to promote what will be the greatest international sporting event of 1999, the Seville LOC are organising a night of spectacular entertainment called "Una Noche Sevillana" on Saturday at the Princesse Grace Theatre. The show, presented by Melba Ruffo di Calabria, will star the international pop and film star Miguel Bose and the celebrated Flamenco dancer Sara Baras. Live TV coverage will be provided by Tele Monte Carlo and Spain’s national channel TVE.
