The IAAF regrets to announce the death of World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) President Danny Hughes, who passed away from a heart attack on 9 February 2009.  A leader in the speciality of Mountain Running for over two decades, Mr Hughes was born in 1936 and was an engineer by profession in his native United Kingdom.

In 1984, Danny was a founding member of the ICMR – the International Committee of Mountain Running - later becoming the organisation’s first General Secretary and then, following the tragic death of Angelo De Biasi, the ICMR President. Danny remained at the helm when his organisation became the WMRA and has been a driving force in the development of international mountain racing for 25 years of the WMRA’s existence.

Danny will be sadly missed by all his colleagues and friends within the sport and the IAAF would like to express sincere condolences to his wife and family.

There will be a cremation at Whitehaven in the UK on Tuesday 17 February at 10.30 a.m. for family and close friends, followed by a service of Thanksgiving and Celebration in Gosforth Church at 12 noon.
