Dear friends of Athletics,

Back in 2003, at the IAAF Congress in Paris, we launched the Athletics’ World Plan, which aims at providing a guidance for all those who care for our sport, and want to see it continue to develop and grow.

In 2009, we updated this plan to ensure that it continued to meet the developing and ever changing landscape of our sport. The Athletics’ World Plan now has six main areas of focus: events, participation, schools & youth, governance, marketing and media.

The Athletics’ World Plan continues to be a plan for the whole sport and not just the IAAF Steering Group. It has been designed to move IAAF forward, but also to create a spirit that encourages debate and innovation in all areas of the sport around the world.

I hope that all our Member Federations will adopt this spirit as they develop new initiatives in their own countries. By sharing in the spirit of the Athletics’ World Plan, all of us involved in our wonderful sport will be able to ensure that, at the time of the IAAF Centenary, Athletics will continue to “remain the number one sport for individuals in a changing world”.

I look forward to updating all of you, Members of the Athletics Family, on the tremendous progress of the Plan’s implementation, and hearing how you have shared in its spirit in your own country, at our next Congress in Daegu.

Lamine Diack IAAF President
