Kimetto and Kiplagat named AIMS Best Marathon Runners of the Year

Dennis Kimetto and Florence Kiplagat have been named as the AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) Best Marathon Runners of the Year for 2014. The two athletes from Kenya were announced as the winners at the second AIMS Best Marathon Runner Award Gala in Athens, Greece, on Friday evening (9).

The awards were voted for by the AIMS members, made up of more than 370 of the world’s leading and most prestigious distance races from more than 100 countries and territories.    

Kimetto, 30, broke the marathon world record at the Berlin Marathon in September when he became the first person in history to run faster than 2:03 with a time of 2:02:57, breaking the previous record by 26 seconds.

“It is very special for me to have won the AIMS Best Marathon Runner Award," said Kimetto. "I have had a great year and this award reflects that. I am honoured to receive a truly global award voted for by the AIMS members, over 370 races around the world."

Kiplagat also established a world record earlier this year.

The 27-year-old improved the half marathon mark to 1:05:12 in a Spanish race, the eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona, in February.

“It is incredibly special for me to receive this prestigious award," said Kiplagat. "It makes it extra special that I have received it in the spiritual home of the marathon in Greece. I am well aware of the 2500-year history of the marathon and I am delighted to feel a small part of it. I would like to thank AIMS for recognising my achievements."

“I am delighted that AIMS 370 races from over 100 countries have recognised the great achievements of these athletes in the spiritual home of the Marathon Movement, Athens,” said AIMS President Paco Borao. "The athletes recognised tonight are an inspiration to people all around the world in promoting the marathon and running movement. It is our pleasure to recognise such fine athletes."

There were several other awards presented at the Best Marathon Runner Award Gala.

The BMW Frankfurt Marathon received the AIMS Green Award for 2014 in recognition of the event’s excellent environmental practice, including developing new projects each year in six ‘spheres of action’ where continuous improvement of environmental protection is the target.

Also short-listed for the award were were the Volkswagen Prague Marathon in the Czech Republic and the Queretaro Maraton in Mexico.

The AIMS Social Award for 2014 was presented to the Tokyo Marathon for its outstanding work raising money for chosen charitable causes, including more than USD $2.42m in 2014.

The AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to George Hirsch in recognition of his significant role in the development of the marathon movement, particularly in the USA.

Hirsch was the worldwide publisher of Runner’s World magazine and, in collaboration with Race Director Fred Lebow, George helped start the five-borough New York City Marathon in 1976.

He is currently the chairman of the board of the New York Road Runners, the organisers of the TCS New York City Marathon.

Kimetto et Kiplagat nommés Marathoniens AIMS de l'année

Dennis Kimetto et Florence Kiplagat ont été élus Marathoniens de l'année 2014 par l'AIMS (l'Association internationale des marathons et courses de fond). Les deux athlètes kenyans ont été dévoilés comme les élus de ces titres honorifiques à l'occasion du second Gala des marathoniens de l'année AIMS à Athènes, en Grèce, ce vendredi soir (9).

Ce sont les membres de l'AIMS, l'organisation qui rassemble 370 des courses de fond les plus importantes et prestigieuses du monde entier et basées dans plus de cent territoires et pays, qui votent pour l'attribution de ces distinctions.

Kimetto, 30 ans, a établi un nouveau record du monde du marathon au Marathon de Berlin en septembre, où il est devenu le premier humain de l'histoire à descendre sous les 2h03, avec un temps de 2h02"57, battant l'ancien record de 26 secondes.

“C'est très spécial pour moi, d'avoir ainsi remporté le Prix de Marathonien de l'année de l'AIMS a dit Kimetto. J'ai connu une très grande année et ce prix le reflète. C'est un honneur immense de recevoir ce prix mondial décerné par les membres de l'AIMS, qui représentent quelque 370 manifestations du monde entier."

Kiplagat, 27 ans, a elle aussi battu un record du monde cette année, lorsqu'elle a couru le semi-marathon eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelone en 1h05'12 au mois de février.

“C'est vraiment un moment spécial pour moi, que me voir remettre ce prix prestigieux, a déclaré Kiplagat. Et cela est d'autant plus magique que cela arrive ici, sur les terres spirituelles du marathon, en Grèce. Je connais bien l'histoire, vieille de 2500 ans, du marathon, et je suis ravie d'en faire maintenant un petit peu partie. Je tiens à remercier l'AIMS d'avoir reconnu mes efforts."

“Je suis ravi que les 370 courses de l'AIMS, distribuées au travers de plus de cent pays, aient reconnu les exploits de ces athlètes, ici à Athènes, la maison spirituelle du mouvement du marathon, a dit le président de l'AIMS, Paco Borao. Les athlètes distingués ce soir sont une inspiration pour les personnes du monde entier qui s'impliquent dans la promotion du marathon et de la course à pied. C'est un plaisir pour nous de reconnaître des athlètes d'un tel niveau d'excellence."

Plusieurs autres prix ont été remis lors du Gala des Marathoniens de l'année.

Le Marathon BMW de Francfort a reçu le Prix vert de l'AIMS 2014 en reconnaissance de ses excellentes pratiques environnementales, y compris, chaque année, le développement de nouveaux projets dans "six sphères d'action" focalisées sur une amélioration continue de la protection de l'environnement.

Le Marathon Volkswagen de  Prague, en République tchèque, et le Queretaro Maraton de Mexico étaient également en lice pour ce prix.

Le prix Sociétal AIMS de 2014 est revenu au Marathon de Tokyo pour le travail extraordinaire qui y est mené dans le but de lever des fonds pour ses causes caritatives désignées. En 2014, ce sont plus de 2,42 millions de dollars US qui ont été réunis.

Le prix reconnaissant l'ensemble d'une carrière a été remis à George Hirsch en reconnaissance de son rôle-clé dans le développement du mouvement du marathon, spécialement aux USA.

Hirsch était l'éditeur mondial du magazine Runner’s World et, en collaboration avec le directeur de course Fred Lebow, il a contribué au lancement du Marathon des cinq boroughs de New York City en 1976.

Il préside actuellement le conseil exécutif des New York Road Runners, les organisateurs du TCS New York City Marathon.
