Don Jorge Echezarreta passes away

The Honorary President of the Uruguayan Confederation of Athletics, Don Jorge Echezarreta passed away last Sunday 13 December.

Don Jorge Echezarreta (Born 14 March 1927) was passionate of sports and shared his career between swimming and athletics, a sport in which for decades he was a leading player for decades as a technical officer and an official.

He was active inside the Uruguayan Athletics Federation assuming different roles in his career and eventually becoming President in 2003 when his health started to decline. He represented Uruguayan Athletics with great prestige as a member of the Uruguayan Federation of Sports, the South American Federation of Athletics, the IAAF Technical Committee (1995 - 2003), the Uruguayan Olympic Committee, and had been an International Technical Official. Recipient of the IAAF Veteran Pin in 1991. 

To honour his career an athletics meeting has been organised every year since 2001 in the city of San Carlos (Maldonado). It was first a national level competition but later upgraded to become a South American Grand Prix. 

The athletics world remembers a great member of Uruguayan sport.
