Kenya’s Doris Changeywo produced the best performance of the day when she won the women’s 10km race in Würzburg, Germany, on Sunday (20).

In Bavaria she clocked 31:35, which is the fifth fastest time in the world so far this year for the distance.

Changeywo, who had placed fourth in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh recently, broke away from Peninah Arusei after six kilometres. The defending champion from Kenyan came in second with 32:07. Olga Minina (Belarus) took third with 33:06. Changeywo missed the two year-old course record set by Ethiopia’s Wude Yimer by just five seconds.

The men’s race was much closer with four runners entering the fourth and final lap of the loop course together. Finally, it was Job Tanui (Kenya) who won with 28:05, just edging out Terefe Maregu. The Ethiopian, who had won the Carlsbad 5k recently, crossed the line in 28:06. Matthew Koech (28:17) and Stephen Rogath (both Kenya/28:26) took the next places after losing contact with the leaders on the last lap.

Adding all events a record number of 6428 runners took part in the 20th edition of the atmospheric Würzburger Residenzlauf.
