Dublin World Championships shake up the  Rankings

26 March 2002 - Monte Carlo - Edith Masai (KEN), Hailu Mekonnen (ETH) and double World Champion Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) all moved up in the IAAF World Rankings following this weekend’s IAAF Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland.

Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) deservedly entered the top-10 of the Men’s 5000-10,000m Event Ranking after winning both the short and the long race in Dublin. Bekele, only 19 years of age, is ranked 10th in the Event Ranking, but has also catapulted in the Overall Ranking from 99th to 64th.

Women’s short course World Champion Edith Masai (KEN) went from 6th place to 5th in the Event Ranking, and rose seven places in the Overall Ranking to 21st. 

Ethiopian runner Hailu Mekonnen edged up to 4th place in the Event Ranking of the Men’s 5000-10,000m, after finishing third in Dublin. The 22-year-old athlete also moved up seven places in the Overall Ranking to 31st.

Silver medallist in the Women’s Long Race, Deena Drossin (USA) went from 30th to 20th in the Event Ranking, and she also climbed one hundred places to 161st in the Overall Ranking.
