14 February 2001 – Banska Bystrica, Slovakia - Ukrainian High Jump veteran Sergey Dymchenko won on Wednesday evening the 9th annual Slovak High Jump meeting in Banska Bystrica.

On his second attempt he was successful at 2.31m and equalled the 2nd best mark of the year. He is also now qualified for the World Indoor Championships, where the standard is exactly 2.31.

Dymchenko made three unsuccessful attempts 2.34, which would have been the best mark of the year.

"Your surface is excellent, also public is great. Problem was in me, because I did not feel very good. I felt some illness. I am happy I am now qualified for the World Indoor Championships and want to achieve the best possible result in Portugal, even a medal.

"Next year I will come again, if I will be totally ok, here I can jump even 240," said Dymchenko, who jumped already in 1990 2.37 but has not been on his best form for the last two years. Three other athletes also tried 2.31 at the competitoin in this city in the centre of Slovakia. 1996 Olympic Champion Charles Austin came closest, but missed. "It is pity, one attempt was very good. I need to jump and compete. It can only get better.

"I want to qualify for the World Indoors and then try to win it. I still like to win titles, so why not to continue even until 2004," commented Austin.

A third Czech jumper, Jan Janku also tried for 2.31 unsuccessfully.

English veteran Dalton Grant put up a surprisingly good performance. It was just his second competition of the year. After jumping 2.21 in Germany he came to Slovakia and set a opening height of 2.20, as only he can do. He cleared this height and then passed 2.23 and went over 2.26 at his third try. "I´m back, I wanted to show everybody that I can still jump high," said Grant who loved the atmosphere in the full hall with music in the background. All four jumpers cleared 2.26 and went straight to 2.31, passing at 2.29.

The men’s High Jump Elite will meet again on Saturday in Armstadt, Germany. Grant and Dymchenko will be competing also on Friday in the Czech republic in Brno at another meet with music.
