Eight to continue their Jackpot quest in Rome – TDK Golden League

MonteVis Golden Gala, the second of this summer’s six TDK Golden League meetings takes place in Rome’s Olympic stadium this Friday 2 July.

In total, eight** out of a possible 12 candidates for the TDK Golden League Jackpot have declared they are ready to continue their quest in Rome despite the demands of a busy Olympic summer.  

Last year there was just one winner of the Jackpot, the peerless Million Dollar Mutola, but with no women’s 800m on the designated TDK Golden League Jackpot programme of qualifying events, a new winner was automatic in 2004.

So who remains in the running for this year’s one million dollar TDK Golden League Jackpot?

Women

400m - The World Indoor bronze medallist Tonique Williams of the Bahamas who flew to a 49.76 second personal best in the first TDK Golden League meeting of 2004 in Bergen, Norway on 11 June.

5000m ** - Turkey’s Elvan Abeylegesse powered her way to a World record (14:24.68) in the women’s 5000m in Bergen.
 
High JumpHestrie Cloete of South Africa, the double World champion, and 2003 Athlete of the Year.

Men

800m Yuriy Borzakovskiy of Russia, the 2003 World silver medallist.

1500m - Kenyan Bernard Lagat, the World Indoor 3000m champion, and reigning Olympic 1500m bronze medallist.

400m Hurdles - Double World champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic.

Triple Jump - Sweden’s Christian Olsson, the World and European outdoor and indoor champion.

Discus - World and Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania.
