Fastest time in Europe gives Miklos Gyulai new Hungarian record
Hungarian sprinter Miklos Gyulai has set a new national indoor record of 6.59 for the 60m in an international invitational meeting in the Hungarian capital on 17 January.
27 year old Gyulai, who is the reigning Hungarian 200m champion indoors and outdoors, beat Aninos Markoulides (CYP) to win the event and beat the previous best mark of 6.65 established by Attila Kovács, who was fourth in the Rome World Championships.
Gyulai, who is the son of former Olympian Olga Kazi, who competed for Hungary in Rome and Tokyo and was European 800m bronze medallist in Belgrade in 1962, and IAAF General Secretary István Gyulai - a very useful 400m runner in his day, works as a commentator for Eurosport and also represents Hungary for the four man bob. He will shortly be heading for Nagano to compete in the winter Olympics and just a week later plans to compete in the European Indoor Championships in Valencia from 27 February to 1 March.
Gyulai's mark was the fastest in Europe so far this season and third fastest in the world after Robert Esmie (CAN) with 6.56 and Donovan Powell (JAM) 6.57; both of these marks were set in Saskatoon (CAN) 11 Jan.
