Fastest time in Europe gives Miklos
Gyulai new Hungarian record
Hungarian sprinter Miklos Gyulai has set a new
national indoor record of 6.59 for the 60m in an international
invitational meeting in the Hungarian capital on 17 January.
27 year old Gyulai,who is the reigning Hungarian 200m champion
indoors and outdoors, beat Aninos Markoulides (CYP) to win the
event and beat the previous best mark of 6.65 established by
Attila Kovács, who was fourth in the Rome World Championships.
Gyulai, who is the son of former Olympian Olga Kazi, who competed
for Hungary in Rome and Tokyo and was European 800m bronze
medallist in Belgrade in 1962, and IAAF General Secretary István
Gyulai - a very useful 400m runner in his day, works as a
commentator for Eurosport and also represents Hungary for the
four man bob. He will shortly be heading for Nagano to compete in
the winter Olympics and just a week later plans to compete in the
European Indoor Championships in Valencia from 27 February to 1
March.
Gyulai's mark was the fastest in Europe so far this season and
third fastest in the world after Robert Esmie (CAN) with 6.56 and
Donovan Powell (JAM) 6.57; both of these marks were set in
Saskatoon (CAN) 11 Jan.
