The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has selected Olusoji Fasuba and Iworima Otonye as its male and female athletes of 2006.

In an outstanding year, Fasuba broke Namibian Frank Fredricks’ ten-year old African 100m record when he clocked 9.85 for second place in Doha on 12 May.

Although the 20-year-old, fifth over the 60m at the World Indoor championships in Moscow, was dogged by injury throughout the year, he also managed to run 10.09 for second place in Lausanne on 11 July.

Triple jumper Otonye leapt to commonwealth silver in Melbourne, Australia, to get her impressive season off track in April. She recorded two domestic victories in Abuja and Lagos before winning bronze in the 15th African Championships in Bambous, Mauritius.
