6 August 2002 - Tunis - 20 year old Margaret Simpson set a Ghanaian high jump record on her way to consolidating her leading position in the Heptathlon, as the 13th African Championships started in Tunis today.

Simpson took the high jump bar up to 1.84 metres, way above her nearest challengers Tunisia's Hanene Dhouibi who leapt 1.75 and Karima Othman who recorded 1.69.

Simpson, earlier won the first event the 100 metres hurdles in 13.93 seconds ahead of Mauritius' Stephanie Domaingue (14.36) and Othman (14.96).
