Flash Interviews: 1500 m Women Final

GoldMaryam Yusuf JAMAL, BRN

I had planned that if it was too fast, I would kick with 300 metres or 400 to go, but as it happened, when the Russian took the lead, it was perfect for me to kick with about 200 or 150 to go. I am extremely happy. This makes up for Helsinki, when I was in good shape, but I was pushed. I am certain that if that hadn't happened, even if I didn't win, I would have medalled then. This gives me great confidence for the Olympics. I trained for one month in St. Moritz, Switzerland for this, and then 10 days before coming here, I was in Yamagata, Japan with the rest of the Bahrain team. I will race next in Zurich on the 7th, and then over one mile in Brussels.

Silver - Yelena SOBOLEVA, RUS

I wanted to win, did all what was necessary. I was fighting till the end, but she was better today. I would not change anything in my tactics in case I would be able to race this final again. It was a very tough race. As I told you after the semifinals the final will be a quick race. The main difference was that she (Jamal) was running the previous race at 4:15 and me at 4:03 level. I think that cost me lot of power in comparison with her. But I should not be too disappointed, silver is still great. I will now race in Zurich the 1500 m and if my acclimatisation in Europe will be ok maybe I will try for mile world record in Brussels. Also I want to run some fast 800 m.

Bronze - Iryna LISHCHYNSKA, UKR

Great tactical race from me. I am really satisfied. I played that very well. After the semifinal I saw there is a chance for bronze, I was not thinking about top two places. I was concentrating totally on my finish at last 300 m. During the last 100 m I was telling to myself - quicker, quicker, quicker. That is the nicest day of my career.
