World and Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser has delightedly accepted to become a UNICEF National Goodwill Ambassador.

Fraser, winner of the 2008 Olympic Games 100m title in 10.78 and last year’s World Championships in 10.73, a national record, accepted her appointment certificate and pin at a fundraising dinner which she organised to raise money for the Haitian Relief Fund at Acropolis Restaurant, Kingston on Monday night (21).

“I am really, really pleased to be a part of that and I am looking forward to work with you and try to accomplish the goals you set out,” she said after UNICEF Jamaica Representative Robert Fuderich made the announcement.

Fuderich said Fraser is the prefect fit and that’s why she was named Jamaica’s first national ambassador since UNICEF was established here in 1977.

“To begin with, she cares deeply about the welfare of Jamaican children. She is a role model for scores of children who are inspired by the way she’s risen against the odds. And she brings the same passion and enthusiasm for her athletic career off the track to address issues affecting children,” said Fuderich.

Fraser who welcomed her appointment said she will play her part in early childhood development. ” I know I will carry out the task of making Jamaicans aware that children are our future,” added Fraser.

Meanwhile, Fraser, organiser of the All-Stars Track Dinner, was pleased with the support received for the All-Stars Track Dinner.

World and Olympics triple gold medalist, Usain Bolt, former World 100m record holder Asafa Powell, Melaine Walker, World and Olympics 400m hurdles champion, World 100m hurdles champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Olympics 100m silver medalist Sherone Simpson, World and Olympics 400m silver medalist Shericka Williams and Great Britain’s Olympics high jump silver medalist Germaine Mason were some of the stars that lucky track & field fans won dinner dates with for the night’s event.
