The deposed emperor of distance running is back on track
with a vengeance. After that fateful day in August last year when he lost two world
records in the space of less than an hour, there were those who thought that Haile
Gebrselassie would be unable to make a retort to Kenya's Paul Tergat (who took over the
10,000m mark) and Daniel Komen, who made the 9 day-old 5000m record set by Gebrselassie
his own.
Gebrselassie himself looked tired at the end of the season, but he is back with a vengeance and the first stage of his recovery took place in Hengelo on Monday 1 June when he slashed more than five seconds off Tergat's mark of 26:27.85 and set the new world mark of 26:22.75.
